Where growing sugarcane is water intensive and increased production of the crops is going to deplete the water level, which is already dangerously low. Add to this large scale diversion of land which could affects others production, of course deforestation. It could pump far more CO2 into the atmosphere than they possibly save as replacement for fossils fuel.
